Wizards of Waverly Place - I Almost Drowned in a Chocolate Fountain

Wayback Wednesday takes us back to a family of wizards living in Waverly Place. Following the formulaic setup of one of the Russo children using magic for their own gain leading to unintended consequences, “I Almost Drowned in a Chocolate Fountain” is pure sitcom nonsense that nevertheless delivers some fun along the way. The premise of the episode is fueled by Justin (David Henrie) and Max (Jake T. Austin) being at odds with their sister and taking some retaliatory action against Alex (Selena Gomez) after she uses a Pocket Elf to cheat on her Spanish test.

Less concerned with her grade in Spanish than the cute boy in the class she’s spent the semester getting to notice her, Alex makes use of the elf (Al Madrigal) to save her failing grade allowing her to attend a group date at a restaurant with Riley (Brian Kubach) and her friends without realizing her brothers have put an elf crazed on chocolate in her purse. After being bitten, Alex showcases the same chocoholic madness making a spectacle of herself to the entire restaurant.

In the end, Alex covers for her brothers saving them some of their father’s wrath (and ending the mini-feud). The episode is notable for Alex being pretty awful at Spanish, much to the horror of her mother (Maria Canals-Barrera), the (let’s say quaint) old-school special effects to create the small elves, and of course Alex’s choco-craziness which is the highlight as the character steers right into the wackiness leading to the episode’s most memorable moments.
