- Title: True Detective – The Secret Fate of All Life

Meeting Reggie Ledoux’s (Charles Halford) meth cooking partner leads Cohle (Matthew McConaughey) and Hart (Woody Harrelson) to the man have been hunting for months. As the pair relate the collar which would make both of their careers to Gilbough (Michael Potts) and Papania (Tory Kittles) we notice, not for the first time, that the series of events described in the interviews immediately following the events and 17 years later don’t match up with the events from the flashbacks. However, for the first time in the series we see just how far both men are willing to lie to obscure what really happened and cover their asses.
What is most surprising about “The Secret Fate of All” is how little of the episode is actual spent dealing with the capture of Ledoux and its immediate fallout as the series moves quickly to fill in gaps between Ledoux’s death and a confession of a suspect seven years later (who commits suicide in prison after mentioning “the Yellow King”) that makes Cohle begin to doubt whether they got the right man and led him to eventually leave the force and fall of the grid for a decade.
As the series reveals its worst kept secret to Hart, that Giblough and Papania believe his former partner to be behind the killings of Ledoux and several others, we also see a flashback not called forth from any any testimony involving Cohle’s discovery of the Yellow King’s former lair that strongly suggests otherwise. With three episodes remaining, and Cohle the leading suspect in a serious of murders, we still have yet to see what destroyed Cohle and Hart’s partnership and sent the detective into the wilderness for ten years. What will also be interesting to see is if the new detectives continue to do what they’ve accused Cohle of and force the facts to fit their theory leading back only to the suspect they want to be guilty.
