“Who Is Harrison Wells?” offers fans of both The Flash and Arrow another crossover episode as Joe (Jesse L. Martin) and Cisco (Carlos Valdes) head to Starling City to examine the night of Harrison Wells‘ (Tom Cavanagh) accident while Barry (Grant Gustin), Caitlin (Danielle Panabaker), Wells, and Eddie (Rick Cosnett) are left in the city dealing with a new metahuman capable of changing his physical appearance to that of anyone he comes into contact with. The search for the human chameleon isn’t helped when Everyman frames Eddie for the shooting of two other police offers while escaping capture.
Not only does “Who Is Harrison Wells?” begin to answer the question about Barry’s mysterious benefactor and provide several fun fan-service moments including Cisco meeting Laurel (Katie Cassidy) and Caitlin and Barry smooching, but the episode also pushes forward stroylines on both shows while the Flash struggles to deal with an entirely new type of enemy. The pairing of Joe and Captain Lance (Paul Blackthorne) (two career cops with headstrong daughters) helps the former find answers about an evil scientist while foreshadowing the end of the rift between Lance and his daughter on Arrow. Eddie’s frame-up requires more people within the department learn that not only the Flash but other metahumans are real. And Cicso’s meeting the Black Canary not only allows for a fun geek-out moment by the scientist but also puts him to use to update Sara’s sonic weapon to something one-step closer to the natural ability the comic character uses.
The end of the episode involving the discovery of both the body of the real Harrison Wells and the scientist’s secret room within S.T.A.R. Labs finally gets everyone, including the reluctant Caitlin, on the same page heading into next week’s ominously titled episode “The Trap.” The question is who is leading who into a trap and what happens to Barry’s S.T.A.R. Lab support staff once his greatest enemy is unmasked?
