Sheldon‘s (Jim Parsons) breakthrough scientific discovery goes to his head, but once he discovers the mistake in his work that led to the discovery completely by chance, rather than his self-pronounced brilliance, the scientist becomes obsessed with accepting no credit for his remarkable discovery.
In the episode’s B-story Howard (Simon Helberg) plans a romantic evening for Bernadette (Melissa Rauch) to commemorate the anniversary of their first date. Realizing she’s never done anything romantic for Leonard (Johnny Galecki), not counting sex, Penny (Kaley Cuoco) sets out to prove she can be romantic (although it takes more work than she’s used to).
As Leonard puts it, Sheldon’s silence during his breakthrough is preferable to both his friend’s self-congratulatory basking in his own glory later self-flagellation. Although Penny’s romantic attempts are predictable in their failure the final scene between the pair is sweet. Howard’s story provides an unique moment for the show as the cast gathers together to perform his love song to his wife after she is put in quarantine at the lab where she works.
