Separate guys and girls weekends don’t go as planned for anyone involved as the ladies head off for a fun Las Vegas weekend leaving the boys distraction-free to work. Well, as it turns out, not so distraction-free. Although Bernadette (Melissa Rauch) and Amy (Mayim Bialik) have plenty of alcohol-induced fun on their own, Penny (Kaley Cuoco) isn’t so lucky staying in the hotel room the entire night boning up for a presentation.
Much to Leonard‘s (Johnny Galecki) consternation, the guys’ plans are equally thwarted as Sheldon (Jim Parsons), Raj (Kunal Nayyar), and Howard (Simon Helberg) keep steering the group off-course on movie discussion, watching movies, or surfing the Internet for countries that look like genitals. In the nerdiest of these moments the foursome struggle with the time-travel paradox of Back to the Future II involving the alternate future and whether or not it should have effected Marty and Doc Brown.
The best choices made in “The Focus Attenuation” are the casting of the party-poopers in each storyline. Having Penny be the responsible one is a nice change-of-pace. And it’s refreshing to see Leonard be the stick-in-the-mud while Sheldon finds himself going along with whatever tangent the discussion lands on. And despite being dragged to a strip club to do her studying, the post-credit sequence shows us that Penny does indeed get some measure of revenge on her two friends for the wild night which she couldn’t join.
