- Title: The Big Bang Theory – The Date Night Variable

The show’s Sixth Season premiere (holy crap, has this show really been on the air five full seasons?) gives us three fights, two dates, and one interloper. Dreading his contractual obligation to an anniversary date night with Amy (Mayim Bialik), Sheldon (Jim Parsons) enlists the help of the group’s lonely third wheel – Raj (Kunal Nayyar). Meanwhile Leonard (Johnny Galecki) tries to get Penny (Kaley Cuoco) to discuss the status of their relationship under the guise of a low-key night of all her favorites.
The lonely Raj makes it from one romantic night to the other, eventually get thrown out of both for butting into each couple’s problems only to find some unexpected company with Stuart (Kevin Sussman) from the comic book store. The episode’s other storyline involves a fight between Howard’s mother and his new bride Bernadette (Melissa Rauch) about where the couple plans to live that reaches Howard (Simon Helberg) millions of miles in space aboard the International Space Station.
Instead of coming out with a bang (pardon the pun), the show delivers a somewhat forgettable episode centered around three separate squabbles and Raj’s loneliness, none of which is solved by the end of the episode. With a few laughs “The Date Night Variable” isn’t bad, but as the starting point for the new season it doesn’t give us much more than our characters going through the same motions we’ve seen the past few seasons.
I usually enjoy the show but this episode felt like a filler episode. Not what I was expecting.
I’ve been a fan since the beginning, but I think that the show isn’t starting off the season too strongly. Raj needs his time to shine.
