In the show’s Sixth Season finale both Sheldon (Jim Parsons) and Penny (Kaley Cuoco) are surprised when Leonard (Johnny Galecki) is offered an exciting job in the North Sea working with Stephen Hawking. As Sheldon attempts to discourage Leonard the rest of the group gives their friend and impromptu going away party.
In the episode’s B-story Raj (Kunal Nayyar) pushes a little too hard in getting the anxiety-prone Lucy (Kate Micucci) to first have dinner with Amy (Mayim Bialik) and, when that ends disastrously, trying to convince her to come to Leonard’s party. Although the scientist looses a girlfriend he gains something in return as he’s able to cry on Penny’s shoulder without the need for alcohol.
“The Bon Voyage Reaction” is a rather uneventful season finale, but it does show how strong a couple Penny and Leonard have become able to deal with the four-month separation without too much drama. Even Sheldon’s response is more measured than usual, either because he recognizes the opportunity Leonard has received or has grown, at least a little, as a character. It appears the weird Raj/Lucy relationship is over, but at least it leaves the character stronger than before and without the need for the device the show has had to lean on to have the character talk with any of the female co-stars for nearly its entire run.
