- Title: Stargirl – Dr. Mid-Nite
- wiki: link
On Halloween, Courtney Whitmore (Brec Bassinger) gets two more recruits in “Hourman and Dr. Mid-Nite” as Beth Chapel (Anjelika Washington) sneaks into Courtney’s room and gets Dr. Mid-Nite‘s goggles to work and Courtney learns that the son of an original member of the JSA lives in town. Beth discovering Courtney and Yolanda‘s (Yvette Monreal) secret last week is immediately followed-up here. While Beth wasn’t chosen by Courtney, she proves her worth by identifying the brooding Rick (Cameron Gellman) as the son of Rex Tyler who we see murdered at the beginning of the episode in a flashback after stashing his son with a no-account brother. Pat (Luke Wilson) also sees a connection between the angry young man and the original Hourman leading him to discover just what Courtney has been up to the past two weeks.
Rick and Beth’s additions continue to make the new JSA an eclectic group, but will Pat help or hinder their efforts now that he knows what his step-daughter has been doing? The introduction of McNider’s googles also presents a Deus ex machina that can provide potentially unlimited information for the young crew Courtney is putting together. Like Yolanda, Rick definitely has some anger issues to work through as Courtney’s small squad already includes a couple of loose cannons. Although she helps the group, you also have to wonder how effective Beth would be in a fight against the Injustice Society of America without some serious training. While we don’t get any of Icicle (Neil Jackson) this episode, his minions continue to do his bidding as the Fiddler (Hina Khan) and the Gambler (Eric Goins) hijack a truck that apparently has some role to play in the New America. The flashback of Rick’s parents meeting an untimely end also features another appearance by Solomon Grundy (who has yet to get a proper introduction on the show).
