- Title: Stargirl – Chapter Nine: The Monsters

“Chapter Nine” picks up the pieces of the season so far with Courtney (Brec Bassinger) and Pat (Luke Wilson) returning to Blue Valley both still feeling the aftereffects of their experiences in the Shadowlands. For Courtney this means apologizing to her friends and choosing to tell Cameron (Hunter Sansone) the truth about his father and the JSA’s involvement in his death which is preempted by an out-of-control Rick (Cameron Gellman) leading to the season’s biggest action sequence. For Pat that means beginning the search for Mike‘s (Trae Romano) mother. Speaking of Mike, he and Jakeem (Alkoya Brunson) continue their search for the missing Cindy (Meg DeLacy) still hoping to recruit her.
Ending in a cliffhanger for both the main and B-stories, Beth (), who unlocks new abilities of her goggles, is able to save the life of the less homicidal one of Cameron’s grandparents leading to the end of the fight but the need for some serious discussion in the next episode. The easiest choice would have been to allow Sofus (Jim France) to die at the hands of the JSA cementing Cameron’s role as enemy to them moving forward in classic comic book style. Choosing a more complicated and nuanced path going forward, it will be interesting to see how events affect Courtney’s relationship status moving forward and what path Cameron will choose for himself.
Although Mike and Jakeem don’t find Cindy, the episode does end with the first appearance of another longtime enemy of the original JSA with the introduction of a CGI version of the Ultra-Humanite who doesn’t seem to be pleased with the interruption of the two teenagers. Is this the killer the JSA has been searching for all season (his bulk and strength would cetainly seem to make him a plausable candidate), and if not just what is the character up to in Blue Valley? Not to be completely overlooked are more small moment of friendships between the Crocks and our hero family including Artemis (Stella Smith) jumping into the fray at the end of the episode.
