- Title: Shadowhunters – Beside Still Water

The season’s new villain Lilith (Anna Hopkins) isn’t given much screentime in “What Lies Beneath,” but the search for her disciple the Owl (who one Shadowhunter mistakenly believes is Jonathan) takes up much of the episode. While Clary (Katherine McNamara), Isabelle (Emeraude Toubia), and an obsessed Jace (Dominic Sherwood) search for the Owl who has been killing mundanes in large numbers, Raphael (David Castro) mourns a loss, Alec (Matthew Daddario) throws a dinner party for his mother, and Simon‘s (Alberto Rosende) new powers continue to grow causing new problems with the Pack and other vampires.
Isabelle draws the short straw here as she’s removed from the larger ramifications of her family dynamic when she decides to go demon hunting instead, but she plays such an inconsequential role in the night’s events it’s not clear why she came along. Also, is Simon’s inability to reach the Ceelie realm punishment or for his own protection? Are Jaces’ visions of Jonathan all illusions or just early signs of him being under Lilith’s spell? In terms of larger themes, the episode continues to play coy about just how powerful Simon is becoming but does deliver one revelation in the final moments which helps explain Jace’s increasingly erratic behavior.
