Capheus‘ (Aml Ameen) life takes a big turn when his attempts to get drugs for his sick mother sends him half-cocked after the gangsters who robbed his bus. Meanwhile around the world “Smart Money’s on the Skinny Bitch” introduces us further to Sun (Doona Bae), both in her job as and unappreciated member of her father’s firm and her secret life as an underground street fighter. It’s the later that proves useful to Capheus as he and Sun’s worlds momentarily merge allowing her not only to win her latest bout in the ring but also somehow give him the skills necessary to fight of an entire gang in the middle of the street halfway around the world.
In other storylines Riley (Tuppence Middleton) heads to London attempting to keep a low profile by staying with an old acquaintance and his new girlfriend, Lito (Miguel Ángel Silvestre) gets to know the new woman in his life, and about her complicated relationship with a dangerous ex-boyfriend, and Nomi (Jamie Clayton) is forced into a medical procedure she doesn’t want to fix what doctors believe makes her a risk to both herself and others. And after capturing Jonas (Naveen Andrews), Will Gorski (Brian J. Smith) becomes a hero within the department but he is unable to shake the unanswered questions he has for the terrorist who alone can offer him answers to what is happening to him.
The slow integration and crossover of the various characters’ lives continues to tease what is to come as the plodding nature of the series continues to be an issue. The inter-cut fights both in the ring and in the dusty street are the highlight of the episode as these two storylines, and (to a lesser extent) that of Gorski, drive the plot much more than the other subplots which continue to spin their wheels. I still think the show is trading teased mystery for more concise storytelling, but at least the stories we are beginning to get are getting a little more interesting.
