Throwback Tuesday takes us back to a con man pretending to be the world’s greatest detective in Remington Steele. “Red Holt Steele” opens with Remington Steele (Pierce Brosnan) and Laura (Stephanie Zimbalist) already on the case investigating the competitor of an aviation company using dirty tactics in attempts to bankrupt their client. Our detectives narrowly survive being killed by Thorpe’s (Lewis Arquette) over-zealous corporate fixer Veckmer (Joel Polis) who blows up her home with the pair on the front lawn. When Thorpe attempts to call things off, he becomes another victim of Veckmer’s crew.
The episode gives us a couple of stakeout sequences, first in the park (where Steele gest some alluring shots of Laura and her workout attire), leading to a chase sequence, and later in the empty warehouse apartment which by the end of the episode will become Laura’s new digs. Laura’s move to the apartment, and the more open flirting between the pair, mark changes as the show sets a new status quo for its Second Season. Breaking into Veckmer’s company (the apex of 80s high-tec) leads to a face-to-face takedown of Veckmer with the help of the firm’s original client (Barbara Cason), who fired the detectives earlier in the episode but has second thoughts about walking away after hearing about Laura’s home.
