After serving nearly three years for a crime he didn’t commit a recently exonerated man (Anthony Anderson) hires Shawn (James Roday) and Gus (Dulé Hill) to solve the crime for which he was wrongfully convicted and find the man who actually robbed the restaurant in order to receive restitution from the state for his incarceration.
Unfortunately for Shawn, it turns out the arresting officer on the case was Juliet (Maggie Lawson) who isn’t too keen on his choice for his latest client. Much to Lassiter’s (Timothy Omundson) amusement, Shawn and Juliet try their best to not fight over the situation that puts them on opposing sides.
Shawn and Gus are able to tie a string of recent thefts to the robbery from three years ago but witnesses all see to think their client was the man responsible. Investigation leads the group to the son (James Earl) of a contractor (Stoney Jackson), both of whom have secret to hide. And the son, who looks like their client, had access to the security systems of both location days before each of the recent robberies.
The episode’s best moment comes after a car accident where Shawn and Gus pretend Lassiter is dead and his ghost is speaking to them from the beyond. Although “True Grits” doesn’t have a great mystery or quite the amount of absurdity of the best episodes, it does bring something to the table with Juliet and Shawn working against each other for the first time since they became a couple. In all an enjoyable, but not that memorable, episode leading into next week’s season finale.
