In an attempt to bond with Rachael’s (Parminder Nagra) son, Gus (Dulé Hill) takes Maximus (Mateen Devji) to the circus not realizing Shawn (James Roday) has been hired to by a member of the circus (Kirsten Prout) only to have the young boy witness the death of the missing person the psychic detective was hired to find. Needing to get closer to the action to investigate what might be a murder, Shawn and Gus take jobs with the circus as the yodeler and master of ceremony.
Woody (Kurt Fuller) confirms Shawn’s suspicions that the acrobat was dead before he was launched into the air and was actually killed by electrocution and not the fall. Despite the possible danger to Gus’ relationship, Shawn convinces Gus to take Max back to the circus to identify the pair of performers he saw putting makeup on the acrobat before the performance. Following the trio of trio of acrobats they discover the fact that the entire group are thieves as well as how the fourth member met his end. Gus, Shawn, and Max follow the thieves into the laboratory only to be arrested for breaking and entering when the police arrive and put Gus’ relationship with Rachael on life support.
Shawn tracks the thieves down and catches them red handed with the stolen Tritium only to discover the situation is far more complicated as the group is being blackmailed into the robberies by the man who is holding Shawn’s missing client hostage. Unable to go to the police, and with Gus still not answering his calls, Shawn comes up with a ridiculous plan that somehow manages to close the case and give him a chance to make things right with his best friend.
In the episode’s B-story Lassiter (Timothy Omundson) and Marlowe’s (Kristy Swanson) happy reunion after her release from prison is threatened by a vengeful parole officer (Katy Mixon) Lassie once slept with and never called. Shawn becomes increasingly uncomfortable when Juliet (Maggie Lawson) lets Marlowe move in with the pair temporarily, a feeling Juliet seconds after walking in on their house guest and Lassie taking a bubble bath together. To speed-up the process and loosen the restrictions, Lassie and Marlowe decide to get engaged which means next week we’ll get to see a bachelor party, Pscyh-style.
