“Bitch chipped us!”
The red herring of Lesli Stone (Elizabeth McLaughlin) will keep the Liars busy for most of the episode, while allowing Hanna (Ashley Benson) to perform some grand theft auto and lead the girls to discover A‘s ability to track them (which their prolonged stay in the hospital didn’t reveal?), but by the end of “No Stone Unturned” the Liars‘ focus will return to finding Charles DiLaurentis who even his father has begun to suspect is still alive. Aria (Lucy Hale) is the only Liar directly targeted in the episode as she returns to the junkyard to find a new disturbing gift from their tormentor and struggles as her feelings for Ezra (Ian Harding) begin to resurface, but has she waited too long to act on them?
Relationships play a large role with the other Liars as well in the latest episode as the return of Emily‘s (Shay Mitchell) old Habitat for Humanity friend forces her to take a good look at her feelings for Sara (Dre Davis). Caleb (Tyler Blackburn) and Hanna finally work through their issues. And Spencer (Troian Bellisario) unintentionally leads yet another boy on (at least this one is dating, living with, or engaged to her sister) as she discovers the depth of her sponsor’s feelings for her which she obviously can’t reciprocate.
Emily and Sarah’s relationship turning romantic is hardly surprising as it has been teased in every episode of the season. While it might be mutually beneficial for each girl in the short run, it’s easy to see how Emily’s protection of Sara at the sacrifice of her own needs (such as a much-needed summer trip out of Rosedale) could lead down a disastrous path. Although she only makes a cameo appearance in the episode’s final moments, Mona (Janel Parrish) plays a crucial role in getting the Liars off of the false trail of Lesli and focus back on Charles who, based on the present he left his father, appears nearly ready to make his reemergence.
