As Spencer (Troian Bellisario) returns from rehab only to find herself under house arrest, cut off from her friends, and with a sobriety coach (Nathaniel Buzolic) hired to help her through the next several days Aria (Lucy Hale) spends a weekend at Syracuse University under the guise of a campus visit but really to get distance and perspective on Ezra (Ian Harding) and his betrayal. Ditching the scheduled activities, Aria spends her time with another prospective Freshman (Nick Roux). As Aria drowns her sorrows and finds the courage to return home and confront Ezra, Spencer fights being cut-off from her friends and the return of suppressed memories that make her believe she may have attempted to kill Alison (Sasha Pieterse) on the night she disappeared.
After being questioned by Gabriel Holbrook (Sean Faris) about the anonymous note left suggesting Alison is still alive, Hanna (Ashley Benson) figures out Paige (Lindsey Shaw) is responsible and that Emily (Shay Mitchell) gave her girlfriend that information. Finally returning home and confronting Ezra, Aria is given a copy of his manuscript which gives the season its second big A suspect – Mrs. DiLaurentis (Andrea Parker). As with Ezra’s reveal, the circumstantial evidence seems rather strong (although with the show returning for another season I wouldn’t expect any big reveal that would spoil the show’s biggest mystery so soon).
Relationships play a large role in the episode. Along with Aria’s lost weekend fling with Riley, and Spencer spending mandated time with Dean, Hannah goes on a date with Travis (Luke Kleintank) that doesn’t end up going all that well, and Emily suspects Ezra’s hand pulling the puppet-strings the break-up between Mona (Janel Parrish) and Mike (Cody Christian). As to the true motives of Ezra, who rather conveniently points the Liars in the direction of another A suspect, and Mrs. DiLaurentis towards Spencer and the rest of the Liars (and whether or not she knows her daughter is still alive), we’ll just have to wait and see.
