Before heading to the school’s country-themed dance, Aria (Lucy Hale), Spencer (Troian Bellisario) , and Emily (Shay Mitchell) seize the opportunity to inspect the crawl space under Mrs. DiLaurentis‘ (Andrea Parker) house looking for any clues that could tie back to Cece Drake (Vanessa Ray). Although the threesome don’t find what they are looking for, yet another attack by their mysterious enemy heightens tension and suspicions and forces Spencer to come clean about Toby (Keegan Allen) looking into his mother’s death. Although her confession helps the Liars better understand their friend’s recent erratic behavior, it also strains Spencer’s relationship with Toby to the breaking point.

While attending the dance Hanna (Ashley Benson) confronts with a shy student (Luke Kleintank) who could be the key witness to clearing her mother of Wilden’s murder but isn’t inclined to do so. Back at the dance, Emily and Spencer “borrow” the hay ride pick-up after catching a glimpse of Red Coat at the hoedown but all they are left holding is more questions and an empty coat. Trying to be true to Jake (Ryan Guzman), Aria continues to ignore Ezra‘s (Ian Harding) attempts to talk until Emily convinces her to listen, and although the pair don’t attend the hoedown together Emily and Paige (Lindsey Shaw) are able to put their recent issues aside and get their dance before the night ends.

With Cece showing up lurking outside Ezra’s apartment, noticeably clad in a black coat, “Bring Down the Hoe” continues to tease that she may indeed be the face of the Liars enemy. Only Caleb‘s (Tyler Blackburn) timely intervention stops Toby from walking right into A‘s latest trap, and Hanna’s pleas finally get some results as the young man comes forward to tell Detective Taylor (Roma Maffia) his story. Heading into next week’s summer finale there are several questions still left in the air including the fallout from Spencer and Toby’s relationship after she breaks her word and tells the Liars about Toby’s mother (and what A might do as a reprisal).
