Afraid the latest number might bring back too many bad memories, Finch (Michael Emerson) gives Reese (Jim Caviezel) the day off for his birthday. Special Agent Donnelly (Brennan Brown) returns to update Carter (Taraji P. Henson) on his search for Reese and ask for her help when he uncovers evidence of physical evidence of Reese’s involvement in an old homicide upstate.
After giving Reese the day off, and with Carter tied up with Donnelly, Finch enlists the help of Detective Fusco (Kevin Chapman) to keep the latest number, a waitress (Dagmara Dominczyk) living under an assumed name, safe from harm.
Realizing that Finch is working a job without him, Reese insuates himself into helping keep the frightened woman safe from her husband, a US Marshall (Jeremy Davidson) hot on her trail. As Carter investigates a case where she’s pretty sure Reese killed the man who terrorized and murdered the woman (Susan Misner) he loved, Reese goes off half-cocked after the US Marshall unwilling to let history repeat itself.
Although we don’t get any movement on several current plot threads, “Many Happy Returns” shows us just how far Reese is willing to go when all his buttons have been pushed, and why Carter and Finch are right to trust him even in those situations. We also get the first meeting between Finch and Reese as a couple more dominoes of the mystery man’s past are laid bare. Finch’s birthday gift to Reese, and the reveal of what it unlocks also reminds us just how closely Finch keeps an eye on everything he cares about.
