“I knew you wouldn’t face your fear unless you had no choice.”
Belle (Emilie de Ravin) and Merida (Amy Manson) play central roles both in flashbacks to Camelot, where the young queen enlists the help of Belle to help save her younger brothers from her enemies, and in Storybrooke were the archer is forced by Emma (Jennifer Morrison) to help turn Rumpelstiltskin (Robert Carlyle) into a hero by threatening the life of the woman he loves. “The Bear and the Bow” marks a turning point in the season as Emma’s plan proves successful. Rumpelstiltskin overcomes his cowardice to become a hero worthy to pull Excalibur from the stone. It also begins the former Dark One’s own heroic journey as the season continues to play topsy-turvy with the roles of heroes and villains.
The backup story finally alerts David (Josh Dallas) and the rest of the group to Arthur‘s (Liam Garrigan) treachery when the king attempts to stop their attempt to contact Merlin (Elliot Knight). Although there’s plenty to be discovered about what happened in Camelot, at least one deception has finally been revealed. Despite Arthur’s attempts to prevent their spell, the group does make contact with the wizard, but the only help they receive is a single name who might hold the key to stopping Emma and whatever she has planned. But who is Nimue and what help can she offer?
