After teasing us with Emma (Jennifer Morrison) going dark, Lily (Agnes Bruckner) and Maleficent‘s (Kristin Bauer van Straten) revenge against the Charmings, and Regina (Lana Parrilla) taking back her life from Zelena (Rebecca Mader), Once Upon a Time switches things up in this tale of mothers and daughters that tempts Regina into returning to the dark path of her past as she outsmarts Rumpelstiltskin (Robert Carlyle) in finding an alternative source for the Author‘s (Patrick Fischler) ink.
Lily’s first visit to Storybrooke is certainly memorable (turning into a dragon, meeting her mother, finding only emptiness in vengeance) even it is not at all what she expected. Flashbacks to Regina’s relationship with Cora (Barbara Hershey) inform her actions in the present which lay the foundation for Rumpelstiltskin’s plan to come to fruition setting up next week’s likely bizarre season finale as the Author rewrites the world as dictated by Mr. Gold. Next week we’ll finally see a reality where the villains do indeed win.
