Friendships will be tested and new partnerships formed as Once Upon a Time in Wonderland sets the stage for the next week’s series finale (ABC had deciding against bringing back the spin-off or a Second Season). The Red Queen (Emma Rigby) is dead, but Jafar (Naveen Andrews) offers the Knave (Michael Socha) a chance to bring her back to life – if the genie can get his hands on the sorcerer’s missing staff and help him change the laws of magic. Betraying Alice (Sophie Lowe) and Cyrus (Peter Gadiot) to get his hands on the staff, the former thief eventually relents and agrees to help Alice and Cyrus put an end to Jafar.
Not pleased with her role as Jafar’s servant, the Jabberwocky (Peta Sergeant) decides to jump sides as well and help get Cyrus into the castle where he can get his hands on the bottles as Amara (Zuleikha Robinson), now returned to human form (although bizarrely off-camera), confronts her former pupil. And that is when, of course, things start going wrong – setting the stage for next week’s finale.
“To Catch a Thief” offers flashbacks showcasing the beginning of Alice’s friendship with the Knave to counterbalance his betrayal in the first-half of the episode. Despite how much emphasis the show has put on the love story of Alice and Cyrus, the friendship between the Knave and Alice has been the true centerpiece of the show making his betrayal (and eventual reconsideration) be all that more effective.
Along with their first meeting we also witness Alice retrieving the thief’s heart and learn just how Cyrus’ bottle first arrived in Alice’s possession. With the show’s conclusion it will be interesting to see if Once Upon a Time incorporates any of these characters into the main show and if Wonderland makes an appearance somewhere down the line or if the entire cast of characters becomes lost down the rabbit hole.
