- Title: Once Upon a Time – Awake

As Once Upon a Time inches closer to the final battle, “Awake” returns to the events of the show’s First Season reveal an undisclosed truth about Snow (Ginnifer Goodwin) and David (Josh Dallas). Revealing that the pair had recovered their memories before the Savior’s arrival in Storybooke, while the new scenes don’t over-convolute the show’s continuity too much, they do raise some red flags about why such events were never disclosed under now.
The events of the episode also suggest how Rumpelstiltskin (Robert Carlyle) was able to see through the curse, which does somewhat contradict the events of the earlier episodes (as does the ease with which characters’ memories are awoken here). While events are problematic when taken against the whole of the show’s timeline, the episode does provide the means for David and Snow to finally break the curse by allowing the entire town (or those they could get to appear in this episode) to make a sacrifice in honor of the one their heroes made years ago.
Hook (Colin O’Donoghue) dimension-hopping also comes to an end as the Black Fairy (Jaime Murray) arrival in Storybrooke provides just the kind of magic needed for Emma (Jennifer Morrison) to find her lost pirate. Along with the reappearance of the Lost Boys, the episode also introduces us to Neverland’s Tiger Lily (Sara Tomko) who provides the pirate with a weapon to use in Emma’s final battle with the Black Fairy. And despite the villain’s bravado, it appears Emma’s support system will be stronger than ever in time for the Savior to face off against the Black Fairy.
