NCIS: Hawai’i returns for a Third Season with Jane Tennant (Vanessa Lachey) ready to return to active duty needing to only pass a psychological evaluation and a final evaluation by old friend Sam Hanna (LL Cool J), both of whom offer their okay… although Sam sticks around to keep an eye on her. Meanwhile, Lucy (Yasmine Al-Bustami), Kai (Alex Tarrant), and Jesse (Noah Mills), and Ernie (Jason Antoon) investigate a public execution on a beach committed by a suspect dressed as a police officer leading to the discovery of a leak the U.S. Marshals seem willing to pin on another one of Tennant’s old friends (Nick Creegan).
With Tennant back on the case, the team captures one of the hitmen (Victor Alfieri) which leads Ernie to discover the problem is much bigger than the Marshals know after he discovers the entire WITSEC database has been released onto the Dark Web. Whistler (Tori Anderson) gets involved in both the case, helping Ernie trace the hackers (leading Tennant and Hanna to Las Vegas), and in the episode’s B-story involving Lucy’s jealousy of her girlfriend’s friendships with Lucy’s coworkers.
“Run and Gun” works on several levels by not ignoring the scars Tennant has still lingering from last season’s finale, dropping hints that may mean Hanna could stick around longer than just a couple of episodes, and having some fun with Whistler and Lucy’s relationship. Although the episode drastically underplays the danger of a WITSEC breach, it does offer a couple twists in revealing this is all about a prisoner escape leading into next week’s episode.
