Jimmy (Ishmel Sahid), Kara (Kiana Madeira), and a comatose Lois (Alice Lee) return to Earth only to be immediately captured by Amanda Waller (Debra Wilson) ignoring their threats of an imminent attack on Earth. They are quickly followed by Brainiac (Michael Emerson) still in control of Superman‘s (Jack Quaid) body who gives the Earth the choice to kneel or burn. While the trio is freed by their Daily Planet brethren, allowing Kara to attempt to stall Brainiac, the real fight takes place within Clark’s mind as Lois struggles to get him to remember who he is, his home, his family, and those who love him.
The “glitch” of Lois which Brainiac can’t remove is a fun idea to explore Lois attempting to reach Clark in different ways day after day until finally admitting her love for him which brings him back. Escaping the mental prison, Clark is free to help Kara fight off Brainiac who has decided to destroy the Earth. However, taking control of Lex Luthor‘s (Max Mittelman) Kryptonite-powered Metallos puts the super duo down for the count leaving the fate of the world in serious doubt heading into next week’s season finale. The episode plays to its strengths putting Superman and Lois first, and allowing Brainiac (the most interesting villain, by far, the show has come up with) to continue to be menacing even in “defeat.”
