“Prized Possessions” provides an interesting twist as Karl Alberg (Rossif Sutherland) investigates the disappearance, and apparent murder, of Cassandra’s (Kristin Kreuk) high-strung friend Emma (Erica Durance). Given that we seen Emma shoot a gun at her husband Charlie (Toby Levins) in the opening tease it’s not hard for us to jump to conclusions as to what occurred suggesting she’s killed her husband and waited to set up a perfect alibi for herself. Picking up on the friction in the marriage, Karl jumps to a similar conclusion. However, the truth turns out to be more complicated.
The fourth episode of the series provides the best mystery so far, as evidence of Emma’s husband both having an affair and stealing from her family’s business (along with no possible way for a body to have been removed from the staged scene without leaving a trace) provides the most obvious answer. There, in fact, was no victim. Along with reuniting two Smallville stars, the episode is also notable for a guest-role for Monk‘s Jason Gray-Stanford, and Karl struggling to connect with his younger daughter Holly (Dakota Guppy), admitting his recent mistakes, and finally choosing to introduce her to Cassandra in the closing moments of the episode.
