While Coulson (Clark Gregg) calls in outside help to evaluate Skye (Chloe Bennet) in the wake of learning about her transformation and occasional earthquake side-effects, Cal Zebo (Kyle MacLachlan) scrubs the bottom of the barrel to enlist the help of some D-list villains (Drea de Matteo, Geo Corvera, Ric Sarabia, Jeff Daniel Phillips) to cause Coulson and his team a relatively small amount of trouble. (Seriously, with the list of all the super-powered baddies S.H.I.E.L.D. has ever come across this is the best he could do?)
There’s plenty of questions about the oddball group Zabo puts together (why didn’t they just amputate the woman’s fingers?, if the screamer has had that headgear on for years how come he doesn’t have a very, very long beard?, what’s the other guy’s power again?), but the main takeaway is how uninteresting the lot of them are. Surprising, but not any more interesting, is the reveal of who Mac (Henry Simmons) and Bobbi (Adrianne Palicki) are really working for setting up a S.H.I.E.L.D. vs. S.H.I.E.L.D. subplot which will likely take far too much of the remainder of the show’s Second Season.
The best part of “One of Us” is the casting of Blair Underwood as Skye’s new therapist and Melinda May‘s (Ming-Na Wen) ex-husband Andrew Garner. Underwood’s one-on-one scenes with both Bennet and Wen are the best parts of the episode (even if it is painfully obvious to everyone except May that its her picture on the doctor’s desk). Sadly his exit (at least for now) ends the most entertaining subplot leaving us only with the unintentional effects of Skye attempting to control her powers and the inevitable battle for control of S.H.I.E.L.D.
