Luther (Idris Elba) was successful in freeing Jenny (Aimee-Ffion Edwards) from the prostitution ring, but that victory came with a price (more than just the nail driven through his hand). The detective finds himself blackmailed by Toby (David Dawson) to procure information about a competitor of the Baba gang. When Luthor is overseen taking classified files from the chief’s office by Gray (Nikki Amuka-Bird) we know things are going to get more complicated before they’re resolved. Then again, this is an episode of Luther we’re talking about, did you expect anything less?
Meanwhile, a new case has landed on the detective’s desk concerning an unstable young man (Steven Robertson) armed with a baseball bat, hammer, and a water gun filled with acid, who brutally attacked bystanders at petrol station, and later an office building, based on nothing more than a random roll of the dice. Although the team eventually captures the man, the closing sequence (set to Marilyn Masons’s cover of the Eurythmics’ “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) that tells us this is only half of the story.
“Episode Three”” is provides several strong dramatic sequencee but at times is hard to watch. The episode is heavy on violence (including multiple sequences of people being beaten to death and an attempted rape), although as much happens just off-camera and is more suggested than shown. The episode also includes an emotionally charged scene between Toby and Jenny which ends rather badly for both of them.
We may not get appearances by Alice Morgan (Ruth Wilson) or Mark (Paul McGann), but there are plenty of loose threads left dangling as the latest episode of Luther fades to black. How the detective is going to get himself out of this one with only one episode remaining should be very interesting.
