Our look back at the Superman‘s more memorable moments on both the big and small screen continues with “Fly Hard.” The final Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman episode before the First Season’s two-part finale, “Fly Hard” offered the opportunity for all of the show’s regular cast to play multiple roles when the Daily Planet staff, along with Lex Luthor (John Shea), are taken hostage by a group of armed robbers (led by Star Trek: Voyager‘s Robert Beltran) searching for the legendary safe of former mob boss Dragon Eddie (Shea).
As Clark (Dean Cain) attempts to keep everyone calm and out of danger, not helped by the antics of both Lois (Teri Hatcher) and Luthor that gets one of them shot, and Jimmy (Michael Landes) crawls through the building’s ventilation system attempting to remain hidden, we witness black-and-white flashbacks involving a love triangle between Eddie, his former partner (Cain), and the money and woman (Hatcher) which came between them, in the offices of the gangster which are now inhabited by a major metropolitan newspaper.
The episode offers a nice mix of action, such as Clark saving Luthor’s life and Lois’ misguided attempts to play hero, and wacky comedic moments like Cat Grant (Tracy Scoggins) returning to the Planet and exiting completely unaware that all of her co-workers are being held at gunpoint. While keeping Superman grounded and out of costume for most of the episode, “Fly Hard” also reveals Clark’s secret to Jack (Chris Demetral) who only sticks around for the next two episodes and doesn’t return for Season Two.
