“You Can’t Save Them All” wraps up the Kai Parker (Chris Wood) storyline far quicker than expected, while also returning the characters trapped in the prison world back to reality (well, most of them anyway). While Dark Josie (Kaylee Bryant) works on a way to get them out of the prison world, Kai shows up at the school under the pretense of being an old friend of Alaric‘s (Matthew Davis here to help. By the time Hope (Danielle Rose Russell) sees the villain for who he is, Kai has managed to put both those in the prison world in jeopardy as well as leading Landon (Aria Shahghasemi) into a trap, forcing Hope to choose who to save.
Despite all the parts of the story to juggle, “You Can’t Save Them All” works well as a standalone that also moves forward several plot points including Landon continuing to grow in his powers, Hope choosing to trust in her boyfriend, and setting up more struggle for Josie before season’s end. There’s plenty of fallout for the show to deal with in the episodes to come including what happens to Alyssa Chang (Olivia Liang) and the students returned from the prison world along with Lizzie (Jenny Boyd) dealing with another loss and her sister, despite outward appearances, still carrying around a boatload of dark magic. Kai’s quick end leaves the Necromancer (Ben Geurens) as the season’s remaining villain, along with whatever creatures may appear from the Malivore pit from week to week. The sudden reappearance of Rafael (Peyton ‘Alex’ Smith) is awkwardly shoehorned in here, without any explanation or answers to how he ended-up tied up in the middle of the woods. The entire sequence with the vamps and werewolf roaming through the woods feels mostly written to give the actors something to do this week and provide someone to find Rafael when the time was right.
