- Title: Kill la Kill – If Only I Had Thorns Like a Thistle…
- wiki: link
The first episode of Kill la Kill introduces us to the rigid structure of the Honnōji Academy whose student council and their supporters are clad in super-powered Goku Uniforms which are the envy of the rest of the student body. The arrival of a new transfer student, a talented fighter with half a scissor-blade sword, will show the students that there is a match for even the mighty power of the the school uniforms.
Ryūko Matoi (Ami Koshimizu) enters the school and picks a fight she isn’t ready for hoping to learn the identity of her father’s murderer. Beaten down, the young girl flees to the ruins of her childhood home where she discovers a weapon which will allow her to stand-up to Student Council President Satsuki Kiryūin (Ryôka Yuzuki) and easily defeat Takaharu Fukuroda (Mitsuo Iwata) who bested her just as easily before she donned her new living sailor-girl uniform which, despite its revealing nature, prove capable of standing up to the most violent attack.
Stylistically I took a little while for me to get used to the world and its characters. Throwing us into the action immediately, the first episode of the series offers more questions that answers. Who created the Goku Uniforms? Who created the living sailor uniform in the hidden basement of Ryūko’s childhood home. Is it truly alive? Who murdered the girl’s father? And why does she have the matching blade? I’m not sure if I’ll stick with the series long enough to learn the answers to all these questions, but the first episode is enough to bring me back for at least one more go-round and see what else is in store for Ryūko.
