- Title: Hawaii Five-0 – A’ohe kahi e pe’e ai

Returning for its Fifth Season, the season premiere of Hawaii Five-0 sends the team after a weaponized domestic drone hijacked and used for a series of brutal attacks on the main island. Calling on the services of Jerry Ortega (Jorge Garcia), McGarrett (Alex O’Loughlin) and Danny (Scott Caan) track down the company who was hired by the U.S. Government to build the drone but has now lost it to a group whose attacks on civilians have a hidden second purpose behind the terrorist attacks.
Along with the main story, the premiere gets in cameos from most of the show’s current recurring stars and lays the ground for several storylines we are likely to see played out of the course of the season. Adam (Ian Anthony Dale) proposes to Kono (Grace Park), Jerry uncovers a likely counterfeit ring, Danny is approached by a less-than-trustworthy friend of his brother (Anthony Ruivivar), and Chin-Ho (Daniel Dae Kim) is once again being investigated by the department on trumped-up charges for stealing a large sum of money.
“A’ohe kahi e pe’e ai” is a solid premiere whose opening credits find both Garcia and Chi McBride upgraded to series regulars. The episode is also memorable for the humorous opening dialogue between Danny and McGarrett during a couples theory sequence as the pair expel their grievances about each other to a therapist. The drone storyline works well, especially the late twist explaining why the group needed the streets of the city empty. I’m a little less interested in whatever new trouble Danny’s brother has gotten into or Chin-Ho being investigated yet again (can the writers find no other subplot for this character besides “dirty cop” and “new love interest”?).
