- Title: Glee – Opening Night

“Tonight you are a star.”
Opening night of Funny Girl finally arrives for Rachel (Lea Michele). Kurt (Chris Colfer) takes away the cell phone of his panicking roommate to create a “bubble of love” in the hours leading up to her Broadway debut with the help of several other former members of New Directions. After Tina‘s (Jenna Ushkowitz) comments spiral Rachel’s anxiety attack even further down the rabbit hole, Kurt calls on Blaine, (Darren Criss), Sam (Chord Overstreet), and Mercedes (Amber Riley) to try and rebuild her confidence. But it’s Santana (Naya Rivera) who ends up having just the right words to get her out of bed, forget the negative gossip blogs, and take her rightful place on stage.
After knocking it out of the park in Act I both Rachel and the show’s director are still concerned with Sue (Jane Lynch) leaving during the show’s opening number, stepping over the New York Times theater critic to do so. After snagging Will‘s (Matthew Morrison) extra ticket when a pregnant Emma couldn’t make the trip, Sue’s night takes a turn for the better when she’s swept off her feed by another theater non-fan (Chris Parnell). Their romantic evening also gives Rachel, high on opening night emotions, some closure with the opportunity to do what she should have done years ago: tell Sue off in a manner than even Santana (Naya Rivera) appreciates.
Funny Girl provides a pair of the episode’s musical numbers as Rachel performs “I’m the Greatest Star,” and Rachel and Sue both perform “Who Are You Now?” (as Sue dreams herself on stage for the number). We also get Rachel blowing off the stress of the official cast party to hang out in a bar with her friends where she performs NONONO‘s “Pumpin’ Blood.” Other musical performances include Rachel performing The Cardigans‘ “Lovefool” in the episode’s opening dream sequence and Sue and Will perform “N.Y.C.” from Annie in a montage that gets the pair to the Big Apple.
