As the races for the school and state elections move to a close Finn (Cory Monteith) assembles the New Directions and the Troubletones together to help lift Santana’s (Naya Rivera) spirits before news of her sexual orientation is announced statewide in an attack ad from one of Sue’s (Jane Lynch) opponents.
Although initially scornful of Finn’s attmepts to arrange numbers just for her, the cheerleader with a proverbial chip on her shoulder eventually comes around, and out to her parents and grandmother.
The episode before Sectionals, and the usual mid-season winter break, gives us six musical numbers, all but one involving or sung with Santana. Kurt (Chris Colfer) and Blaine (Darren Criss) do a duet of Pink‘s “Perfect,” Puck (Mark Salling) performs Melissa Etheridge‘s “I’m the Only One,” Santana and Shelby sing k.d. lang‘s “Constant Craving,” Finn sings “Girls Just Want to Have Fun,” and Santana and Rachel (Lea Michele) lead the girls in Katy Perry‘s “I Kissed a Girl.”
Other stories involve Puck (Mark Salling) and Shelby’s (Idina Menzel) relationship going to the next level, and Rachel making a mistake that could not only hurt her chances of getting into the performing arts college of her choice but puts her glee club teammates in trouble at Sectionals. And in the other story Coach Beiste (Dot Jones) fights for her man (Max Adler) who Sue has set her eyes on. It’s nice to see Jones get a big chunk of the episode here, including her own number: Dolly Parton‘s “Jolene.”
Although I’m not sure how I feel about a Sectionals showdown between New Directions and the Troubletones without Rachel Berry this episode has some nice numbers, and a nice message as Santana’s pals stand up for their friend (whether she wants them to or not).
