In the show’s return after its Spring hiatus the Glee Club bands together to welcome back a wheelchair-bound to Quinn (Dianna Agron) after her car accident. Despite her current paralysis the former captain of the Cheerios is determined to walk, and dance, again before Nationals. Just for good measure “Big Brother” throws in McKinley’s senior ditch day and White Collar’s Matt Bomer as one hell of a self-absorbed actor returning home to enjoy his celebrity and show off to his little brother’s friends.
Blaine (Darren Criss) is shocked by the return of his older brother Cooper (Bomer) to Lima. Cooper is a self-absorbed Hollywood commercial actor who Blaine has never seen eye to eye. He’s even more ashamed after his brother gives the group what might be the worst acting workshop of all-time. It takes the episode’s final musical number, a duet of Gotye‘s “Somebody That I Used to Know,” to finally bring the brothers together.
Sue (Jane Lynch) is horrified to learn Principal Figgins (Iqbal Theba) has made swim coach Roz Washington (NeNe Leakes) co-coach of the Cheerios after Sue was late to Regionals following a doctor’s appointment. Now her best chance to wrest control back of the cheerleaders is to help the Glee Club win Nationals, and take home the $10,000 first place cash prize. Although grateful for the help, Mr. Shue (Matthew Morrison) is less than pleased by the cheerleading coach’s methods.
As the seniors discuss plans for senior ditch day, Artie (Kevin McHale) and Quinn bond over her condition and plan their own celebration, Sue gets some concerning news about her pregnancy that makes her rethink her approach to the Glee Club, and Puck (Mark Salling) plans relocating to California after graduation and tries to convince Finn (Cory Monteith) to go with him, which ends up causing some friction between Finn and Rachel (Lea Michele).
Although a little too one-note and far too over the top, Bomer is a nice choice for the role of Cooper, and it’s obvious he’s having a blast. The unexpected news about Sue’s pregnancy and Quinn’s inability to accept the hard truth that everything might not turn out as she wants help to give the show a pair of strong threads which should be woven into the season’s remaining storylines.
This week’s performances include Quinn and Artie in a wheelchair duet of Elton John‘s “I’m Still Standing,” Blaine and his brother perform a mashup of Duran Duran‘s “Hungry Like the Wolf” and “Rio,” Blaine sings Christina Aguilera‘s “Fighter,” and Artie and Quinn perform the Givers‘ “Up Up Up.”
