- Title: Elementary – Rip Off
- wiki: link
In the only episode of the series not to feature Lucy Liu as Joan Watson, Sherlock Holmes (Jonny Lee Miller) and Kitty (Ophelia Lovibond) consult on a case involving the death of a small postal store owner whose severed hand was discovered on the street. After a little investigating the pair link the man’s death to illegal diamond smuggling, eventually uncovering the identity (and motive) of their killer.
Watson’s absence is certainly felt in “Rip Off,” but it also allows the series to focus on Sherlock’s relationship with Kitty (and also grumble about his discovery that Watson wrote down many of their cases together in the form of “The Casebook of Sherlock Holmes”). The episode’s B-story involving Captain Gregson (Aidan Quinn) attacking another police officer to protect the honor of his daughter (Liza J. Bennett) comes a bit out of nowhere (why hasn’t she been introduced before now?) but works to tie Kitty more closely with Gregson by allowing her to offer an experienced opinion about a similar situation.
