Returning for its Fourth Season, the season premiere of Dragons: The Nine Realms opens by showcasing the obsessions of both Tom (Jeremy Shada), who still hasn’t been able to get into the Viking puzzle box found at the end of last season, and Olivia (Julia Stiles), who is looking for answers for the impossible rock found on her latest expedition. “Cold Open” also picks up the thread of Buzzsaw (Haley Joel Osment) when the Dragon Riders discover the entrance to the Ice Realm.
Offering the Dragon Riders a sob story that hides his true motivations, the dragons are far less willing to trust the oddball than the humans who eventually also pick up on his lies and set a trap of their own. The threat of Buzzsaw hurting dragons in the realm, or possibly leaving and revealing the existence of the dragons, is set up as a season-long threat for the show. The episode also offers a B-story with Eugene (Vincent Tong) “helping” D’Angelo (Marcus Scribner) to help with injured dragons before eventually arriving to help chase off Buzzsaw.
