- Title: Dead Boy Detectives – The Case of the Hungry Snake

After returning from Hell, the season finale ends with Edwin (George Rexstrew) and Charles (Jayden Revri) captured by Esther (Jenn Lyon) who has built a machine to pull the suffering from a ghost and turn it into magical power. Edwin’s Hell experiences turn out to be the perfect battery. Crystal (Kassius Nelson) has to put aside her struggle with the return of her memories and the realization of the awful person she was before losing them and help rescue the ghosts with the help of Niko (Yuyu Kitamura) who won’t survive the showdown (or will she?).
“The Case of the Hungry Snake” wraps up the various threads to the season with Crystal having recovered the lost pieces of herself and made two real friends for the first time in her life, Esther defeated at the hands of the goddess who granted her immortality thanks to Crystal’s quick thinking, Edwin freed from the curse of the Cat King (Lukas Gage), and the Night Nurse (Ruth Connell) assigned to work with the Dead Boy Detective Agency to continue their good work into next season (apparently back in London). The fate of Niko is obviously the hanging thread left to tease while no doubt there will be plenty of one-off mysteries as well (if the show is indeed renewed).
The fate the show appears to still be a mystery as Netflix hasn’t decided yet if they will choose to renew it. If this is indeed the final episode of the series, The Dead Boy Detectives was certainly a success. I think moving forward with more week-to-week mysteries and less arcing storylines could certainly help the show if it does return. Working in the Night Nurse and London would also be interesting aspects to give a second season a different feel.
