Throwback Tuesday takes us back into the Cold War spycraft of Danger Man. John Drake (Patrick McGoohan) is contacted by an old friend (Jane Merrow), desperate for his help after her husband (John Breslin) is abducted by the Romanian embassy in Geneva who wrongly believe him to be a terrorist. Despite not having the backing of his agency, Drake calls on a couple of fellow spies to organize breaking into a foreign embassy in Switzerland and liberating their friend before either the Romanians or the Swiss realize what they are up to.
“A Room in the Basement” is an immensely enjoyable episode with several moving parts including the frantic call for help and Susan’s quick thinking following the kidnappers to the embassy, Drake putting together a team and his bluff to suss out information about the embassy and capture one of their men, and the break-in and rescue itself in which Susan (Merrow) plays a role as a distraught young woman giving them access to the hospital next door. As a cherry on top, Drake allows his irate superior to take credit for his daring plan (which he now can’t punish Drake for).
