When Annie (Piper Perabo) and Auggie (Christopher Gorham) discover Jai’s (Sendhil Ramamurthy) safe house they also learn that Simon (Richard Coyle) and his group was the subject of the investigation that likely got Jai killed. This forces Annie and Lena (Sarah Clarke) to come clean about Annie’s relationship to the spy to both Arthur (Peter Gallagher) and Joan (Kari Matchett). Not wanting to be part of a CIA laid trap to bring down a man who is in love with her, Annie makes a bold proposal that she be allowed to make the pitch to Simon and bring him in willingly.
Although she comes damn close, Annie’s attempt to bring Simon in ends in a mall shoot out with Simon on the run from a Russian shooter who Annie recognizes from the diner moments before Jai’s car went up in flames. Annie goes after the shooter along with full tactical support but is unable to bring him in alive. Despite the praise she receives from colleagues, Annie can’t help but feel like a failure with Jai’s killer dead and Simon in the wind.
“Glass Spider” has a number of close calls, twists, and difficult choices and admissions including Simon’s romantic last-minute proposal (and Annie’s answer), Lena’s unexpected betrayal, and (in the episode’s best scene) Annie and Auggie’s short but frank conversation after she looses Simon at the mall and the reason for Annie destroying the listening device. The episode leaves plenty of fallout for next week including Annie fighting for her life while Auggie and the rest of her colleagues will have to fight for her equally damaged reputation.
