When a samurai sword wielding vigilante hits the streets of New York and halves an attacker (James Ferris) in an alley Beckett (Stana Katic) and Castle (Nathan Fillion) draw the case. Despite getting off-track for a non-too-subtle sequence which was little more than a commercial for Marvel Comics, the show delivers its fair share of Castle moments.
The investigation takes quite a few twists and turns (I’ll admit, I didn’t see the last one coming) and the seemingly never-ending list of suspects for a costumed vigilante draws the ire of Homicide’s new captain (Penny Johnson). When all is said and done, however, Beckett and Castle get their man.
The show’s B-story involving Alexis’ (Molly C. Quinn) plans to attend Stanford with her boyfriend (Ken Baumann) at the end of the semester doesn’t work as well as I’d like. Alexis is far too short with her father’s genuine concern, especially for a character we’ve seen carefully measure her choices over the show’s three-plus seasons. The attempt to tie the relationship of a pair of suspects to that of Beckett and Castle is a bit on the nose for my tastes as well (even if it does give us a fun final moment between the pair).
After wrapping up an emotional cliffhanger it’s good to see the show get back to a fun mystery of the week, even if its got some noticeable flaws. The super-hero theme provides some fun moments, and its always fun to see Castle and company in action every week, but odds are this is going to be one of this season’s weaker episodes.
