Takeshi Kovacs (Anthony Mackie) begins his search for the talented killer he believes to be masquerading in the skin of Quellcrist Falconer (Renée Elise Goldsberry). He’s not the only one looking for Horace Axley’s killer, as the leader of a Protectorate squad (Torben Liebrecht) cuts out local police and assumes command of the investigation which he is certain will tie back to a terrorist plot. Carrera (Liebrecht) has added incentive to investigate the crime as the sleeve he mistakenly believes responsible for the murder is Protectorate property which Kovacs is walking around the city in.
The second episode of the show’s Second Season is all about rearranging pieces and getting characters where they need to be by the end of the episode. Needing information on Axley and potential enemies with motives for murder, Kovacs taps Trepp (Simone Missick), the bounty hunter who landed him in this situation in the first place, a subplot that showcases Kovacs abilities (although mostly off-screen), leading him to an underground club and coming face-to-face with someone from his past. Choosing to help Quellcrist Falconer escape means he faces Carrera alone in a skin the soldier has unique control of because of its modifications.
