Alex Rider - Recruit

Keeping an open mind, for now, and hoping to learn information about Invisible Sword, Alex (Otto Farrant) begins his training with SCORPIA. He meets the other recruits who brutally attack Alex as an attempt to soften him up and drive any weakness or mercy out of him. Gregorvich (Thomas Levin) and Nile (Jason Wong) offer similar advice and teaching, pushing Alex to remove compassion from the work that is to follow. Eventually Alex proves himself without stooping to the methods of the other soldiers, winning a contest in the maze below the compound and his first assignment for SCORPIA.

Meanwhile, Alex pumps Gregorvich for as much information as he can about his father and their time together leading to some flashbacks of the pair working together for SCORPIA. While Alex sticks around learning what he can, and earning some respect from the other wannabe soldiers, there’s never a point here where the show really sells Alex being introduced in working for SCORPIA, although the next episode will offer him new motivations. As for the Widow Julia Rothman (Sofia Helin), she presents Alex with a different type of gift, one which Alex won’t truly understand until the end of the season.

Meanwhile, Kyra (Marli Siu) and Tom (Brenock O’Connor) search for their missing friend leading to a confrontation with Nile gives the pair tickets to return to London and and a warning that remaining will only put Alex in more danger. While the pair decide to stay, the also make the questionable choice not alert anyone else of the trouble Alex has gotten himself into. If they had, Mrs. Jones‘ (Vicky McClure) visit to Jack (Ronke Adekoluejo) may have gone quite differently.
