AEW Rampage – 12/6/2024

The December 6th edition of AEW Rampage featured three Continental Classic matches with Mark Briscoe vs. Kazuchika Okada, Daniel Garcia vs. The Beast Mortos, and Ricochet vs. Komander (taking the place of the injured Juice Robinson).

Highlights:

  • Daniel Garcia defeated The Beast Mortos in the match that neither opened or closed the show but certainly entertained and got the crowd going. Mortos continues to impress in defeat. When he starts winning, look out.
  • Following up his draw in his first tournament match, Kazuchika Okada defeated Mark Briscoe in a solid TV match that hit the expected spots with Okada ending things with the Rainmaker.
  • An aggressive Ricochet defeated Komander in the night’s main event. Lots of flippy fun and a near-fall for Komander the crowd really popped for. If you are going to only track down one match from Rampage to watch, this would be the one to see. I think AEW should seriously think about putting Ricochet in the Hurt Syndicate allowing him to lean into the same aggression the group personifies.

Less Notable:

  • Not getting an introduction, Deonna Purrazzo and Taya Valkryie took on a pair of jobbers in a match shorter than the ROH segment earlier in the night. Not the strongest booking for The Vendetta, but at least they are getting some time in the ring to showcase how well the two can work together as a team, Deonna especially looked good here, after several pre-taped segments. The match was also notable for setting up Purrazoo as the “boss” of the group.
  • Worlds End promo with highlights of the Continental Classic and the Death Riders.
  • Separate video package hyping the Continental Classic.

Misses:

  • Chris Jericho took to the ring to complain about Matt Cardona helping to promote their main event at ROH Final Battle. Cardona came out to lukewarm applause. Words, then fists, flew with Bryan Keith hitting the ring for a beatdown. If you had to do this, a video package highlighting the ROH confrontation could have done the same job in 1/3 the time. At this point, Jericho’s one-minute NY pre-taped segment on Dynamite is a far better way to use him.
