AEW Dynamite - 7/10/2024

The July 10th edition of AEW Dynamite featured the finals of both the men’s and women’s Owen Hart Cup Tournament with Willow Nightingale vs. Mariah May and Bryan Danielson vs. Hangman Page. Also on the card was Chris Jericho vs. Samoa Joe and a four-way featuring Claudio Castagnoli, Pac, Kyle Fletcher, and Tomohiro Ishii, and appearances by Mercedes Moné, Will Ospreay, and the AEW World Champion Swerve Strickland.

Highlights

  • After video clips highlighting MJF‘s diatribe on AEW Collision, Dynamite kicked off with Will Ospreay hitting the ring with his rebuttal calling out MJF which led to a match being set up next week for the International Title for the show’s 250th episode.
  • Following a video package setting up the Owen Hart Tournament final, and the introduction of Jeff Jarrett as the special enforcer, we got the opening match between Bryan Danielson and Hangman Adam Page. The match played on the wear-and-tear on Danielson’s neck, Nigel McGuinness‘ beef on commentary, and Hangman’s more vicious nature. Plenty of hard-hitting action here with the cowboy taking a couple of rough spots including a hard landing from a spider suplex and Danielson being piledriven at ringside. After a ref bump, the closing of the match featured Jarrett stepping in as the new referee and giving a fair count punching Danielson’s ticket to All-In. Later in the night, we got Hangman backstage telling The Elite he would join them for Blood and Guts.
  • Following the Danielson/Page match we got an in-ring celebration with him being awarded the trophy and belt by Jarrett and Martha Hart which was immediately followed by Swerve Strickland hitting the ring and, after the commercial break, solidifying the PPV’s main event and announcing he is joining Team AEW for Blood and Guts.
  • Mercedes Moné, now officially in heel mode, hit the ring to celebrate herself leading to the arrival of Dr. Britt Baker, DMD and the camp hightailing it out of the ring.
  • In the main event, Mariah May defeated Willow Nightingale to win the women’s final of the Owen Hart Tournament and punch her ticket to All-In. The crowd were a little slow to get involved in the main event (they were far from boisterous throughout the night), but were thoroughly engaged by the end and in the twist that followed. A bit of tomfoolery here with interference from Kris Statlander and Stokely, but Mariah won clean in the middle of the ring setting up her match with her mentor Toni Storm at All-In
  • After celebrating with Toni immediately following the win, AEW waited no time to turn Mariah heel having her attack both Toni and Luther in the closing angle to the show with the final image being Mariah standing over the bloody Toni to chants of “You sick fuck” as Dynamite went off the air.
  • Darby Allin returned and attacked Brandon Cutler backstage.
  • Chris Jericho defended the FTW Championship against Samoa Joe in a Stampede Street Fight. Typical plunder match craziness ending with Jericho putting Joe through a wall in the back using a forklift.
  • Pac defeated Claudio Castagnoli, Kyle Fletcher, and Tomohiro Ishii in a four-way match (and a future International Title shot) with plenty of spots highlighting each of the wrestlers. Pac cute a short promo afterwards saying he will definitely be at All-In.

Less Notable:

  • Commentary mentioned Taz was banned from the building based on Chris Jericho lobbying the EVPs.
  • We got a rap video from the Acclaimed.
