AEW Collision - 8/31/2024

The final AEW Collision of August included two trios matches, FTR vs. the Undisputed Kingdom, Buddy Matthews vs. Komander, Kyle Fletcher vs. Tomohiro Ishii, and a four-way main event with Queen Aminata vs. Hikaru Shida vs. Serena Deeb vs. Thunder Rosa for a chance to face Mercedes Moné at All Out.

Highlights:

  • Prior to the four-way main event setting up the winner to challenge for the TBS Championship at All Out, throughout the evening we got short vignettes highlighting Hikaru ShidaQueen Aminata, Serena Deeb, and Thunder Rosa. This was the same method Rampage used the previous night to highlight the main event over the course of the evening and it worked just as well here. Separately, Aminata and Deeb got a backstage segment with Lexy Nair. The match was solid with Shida and Aminata especially looking strong. Thunder Rosa was on the wrong end of a pretty awkward looking spot where it appeared she may have misjudged the move Deeb was going for. In the end, the crowd favorite Shida got the win punching her ticket to All Out.
  • Kyle Fletcher squared off against Tomohiro Ishii with Don Callis on commentary in a hard-hitting match highlighted by a top-rope hurricanrana by Ishii leading to a near-fall to the astonishment of everyone. After several near-falls, Fletcher eventually won.
  • Opening the show was the trios match featuring Kyle O’Reilly, Orange Cassidy, and Holgram defeating the Beast Mortos, Lee Moriarty, and Johnny TV. Rough in a couple of spots, everyone still got their moments to shine starting with Cassidy and O’Reilly both having fun trying to figure out if Hologram was real or not. A fine match, but probably the weakest of the card given how much everything else this week overdelivered. Later in the night Cassidy and O’Reilly interrupted Pac‘s backstage interview with Lexi Nair setting up a trios match for Dynamite
  • In the second match of the night, the Bang Bang Gang defeated the Premier Athletes in another trios match with the Gunns hitting the 3:10 to Yuma for the win.
  • The very-much over FTR defeated the Undisputed Kingdom (notably without Roderick Strong at ringside or commentary). The match was immediately followed by Grizzled Young Veterans jumping the winners and cutting a promo on them in the middle of the ring declaring they are tired of living of the other team’s shadow.
  • Komander was defeated by Buddy Matthews in yet another high-quality match. Brody King came out to celebrate with his House of Black teammate after the match. The MxM Collection called out the pair from backstage for a match next week which should be a lot of fun.
  • Accompanied by Leila Gray, Top Flight, Action Andretti, and Lio Rush (all in matching gear) defeated the the Iron Savages, Jacked Jameson, and the Outrunners’ Turbo Floyd (with Truth Magnum at ringside) in an 8-man tag that was a hell of a lot of fun. The story of the match included the teamwork and speed of the faces vs. the power of the heels and his team not letting Turbo Floyd into the ring.

Less Notable:

  • Recap of Jon Moxley‘s interview on Dynamite.
  • Recap of Bryan Danielson‘s segment from Dynamite which ended with the attack from Jack Perry.
  • Recap of Mariah May‘s win at All In setting up a match with her defending the belt against Nyla Rose.
  • Pre-taped Mercedes Moné segment hyping her recent defense of the NJPW Strong Championship.
