Young Justice - True Colors

In the latest episode the Young Justice team brings in the Atom (Jason Marsden) to try and find a way to remove the scarab from Jaime Reyes (Eric Loomis) who fears Impulse‘s (Marsden) prophecy of the Blue Beetle’s future coming true. While the Atom is unsuccessful in his attempt, Jaime does get some good news from the Green Beetle (Phil LaMarr) of Mars who informs him even if the scarab cannot be removed it can still be controlled.

Several members of the Young Justice team are trapped in the Hall of Justice along with Zatanna (Lacey Chabert) and Captain Marvel (Chad Lowe) when Despero shows up looking for a fight and the heads of worthy opponents to stuff and mount on his wall. With the team totally cut-off from the rest of the world, and Zatanna comatose due to Despero’s mind control, Superboy (Nolan North), Miss Martian (Danica McKellar), Bumbleebee (Masasa Moyo), and Mal (Kevin Michael Richardson) are on their own to help Captain Marvel stop the warlord from littering the Hall of Justice with their corpses.

Young Justice #23

young-justice-23-coverThe current storyline continues as Superman, Superboy, Captain Atom, Captain Marvel, and Wonder Woman fight off Braniac‘s crystallized minion in space the various Young Justice teams try break through the impenetrable field surrounding Metropolis and discover more information about the spaceship floating above the city.

Although the comic is fun, it does feel far too much like treading water and needlessly stretching out the arc as none of the major stories are moved that far forward. However, we do get an appearance by the Young Justice version of Deashot in the flashback to five years ago (that is still be awkwardly continued along with the current storyline). Although he isn’t quite wearing his classic costume, the villain certainly looks better than his New 52 makeover.

There’s enough here for fans, including appearances by several members of the team, but it’s certainly not a must-read and could probably be skipped without missing a beat of the overall arc. For fans.

Young Justice #22

young-justice-22-coverWith Superman, Superboy, Captain Atom, Captain Marvel, and Wonder Woman all trapped on the moon and several other members of both Young Justice and the Justice League trapped inside an impenetrable sphere surrounding Metropolis the remaining members of the team work together with the Atom, the Flash, and the Martian Manhunter to figure out just what the hell is going on as Miss Martian and Lagoon Boy head to the moon on a rescue mission.

The story is a little more focused this time around, but we still get more more five-year flashbacks involving Dick Grayson‘s relationships with the ladies of the team. As good as these are by themselves, these flashbacks continue to be somewhat disorienting, especially as they have yet to be tied directly to the current situation our heroes find themselves in.

The issue is certainly packed with characters including several of the newer members of the Young Justice team including Batgirl, Wonder Girl, Zatanna and Blue Beetle, and even a surprise cameo by Plastic Man. Worth a look.

young-justice-21-coverYoung Justice #21 keeps to the format started in last month’s issue as we jump around from current events to those that took place five years before. In the current time period the arrival of Braniac has caused several members of both Young Justice and the Justice League (and several super-villains) to be kidnapped including Superman, Superboy, Captain Atom, Captain Marvel, and Wonder Woman.

Trapped on the moon Captain Atom and Captain Marvel come up with a plan of escape, while on Earth the remaining heroes discover the entire city of Metropolis has been cut-off from the outside world. Nightwing and Wonder Girl‘s pitch to the new Blue Beetle to join the team is put on hold as the heroes regroup and split their remaining members into two teams.

The first team led by Nightwing tries to find a way into Metropolis, where the heroes trapped inside the force field are already on the scene. And a second team including Miss Martian and heads to the moon to rescue their friends and find some answers. Worth a look.
