The second issue of Young Justice picks up with our young heroes transported to Gemworld. The primary story here is Wonder Girl starring down the barrel of Jinny Hex‘s shotgun, and forming a shaky truce. Wonder Girl’s recent past is also explored here a bit, including her run-in with Zeus and explaining a bit about why Cassie was slow to initially join the fight that led the teen heroes to Gemworld.

From what we see in Young Justice #2 it’s apparent that this first arc of the relaunched Young Justice title is going to jump around quite a bit, filling in some back story while also bringing the heroes together in Gemworld and exploring their new surroundings.

Young Justice #1

DC Comics relaunches Young Justice as part of their new teen-focused Wonder Comics line. The first issue follows the basic formula of a threat large enough it causes a group of heroes to converge and become a team. Issue #1’s threat are invaders from Gemworld, a threat met head-on by new character Jinny Hex only recently arrived to Metropolis who is joined by Young Justice staples Robin, Impulse, and a reluctant Wonder Girl who all arrive separately to the scene. They are also joined by a new Teen Lantern.

Mostly set-up, Young Justice #1 introduces us to most of the key characters of the team (including the final two members who won’t show up until the end) while setting up a threat large enough that it will require the heroes to stay together to fight. Having our heroes be separated and sucked into Gemworld to meet new threats and allies offers an interesting twist headed into the comic’s second issue.

Young Justice: Invasion

Set five years after the show’s First Season, the Second Season of Young Justice introduced older versions of the original show’s characters while expanding the team with a new set of young heroes as well. Invasion‘s overall arc involves the behind-the-scenes manipulations of The Light as well as the arrival of The Reach on Earth whose true purposes are far more nefarious than the aliens let on.

With Dick Grayson moving onto the role of Nightwing (Jesse McCartney) the team gets a new Robin (Cameron Bowen) along with Batgirl (Alyson Stoner), Wonder Girl (Mae Whitman), and Impulse (Jason Marsden) all becoming a part of the team. Aqualad (Khary Payton) and Artemis (Stephanie Lemelin) will both spend a large portion of the season undercover with The Light, the truth about Red Arrow & Arsenal will be discovered, and another founding member of the team will give his life to save the world from The Reach in the series finale.

Based on the late 90s comic of the same name, Young Justice offered DC Animation a new show to focus on its teenage heroes on a slightly different Earth who weren’t quite ready to fully join the Justice League. Making use of the youngsters lower profiles Batman (Bruce Greenwood) sets the group of up Robin (Jesse McCartney), Miss Martian (Danica McKellar), Aqualad (Khary Payton), Superboy (Nolan North), Kid Flash (Jason Spisak), and Artemis (Stephanie Lemelin) as a covert force.
