Things are getting a bit crowded. Foreshadowed at the end of the previous issue, Young Justice #14 catches up with Impulse recruiting other young heroes for Young Justice’s fight against. S.T.A.R. Labs. Looking to include as many characters from various versions of the team as possible, the latest issue features panels of Impulse recruiting the likes of Aqualad, Spoiler, Arrowette, and Sideways to go along with the current team, Naomi, the Wonder Twins, and Dial H for Hero.

In terms of an event comic, there’s some fun here (particularly in Bart’s recruitment). Once assembled the comic feels a bit rushed with the combined heroes making short work of what Dr. Glory can throw in their path. The evil scientist is also thwarted in Skartaris where some late-arriving help prevents Superboy from getting skewered by a Kryptonite sword.

Young Justice #13 spends most of its time in Skartaris where a traumatized Superboy is comforted by the Warlord. Those unfamiliar with the history of Mike Grell’s character, or the strange subterranean land filled with magic and monsters hidden at the center of the Earth, are given a primer here (including panels drawn by Grell himself). Featuring the work of three different artists, the comic has a less cohesive look than the previous issues of the volume but fans of the Warlord aren’t likely to mind as he steals the best moments here.

If you are looking to skip an issue and not miss much of the overall arc, this is probably and easy one to pass up as it does feel more of a sidebar into introducing Warlord than anything else.

While Superboy literally cries over being stranded in Skartaris, the rest of Young Justice calls in some reinforcements as Impulse and Wonder Girl (but mostly Bart) are able to convince the Wonder Twins to help their friends, and “borrow” one of Wonder Woman’s possessions (although the need for it is a little unclear).

With much of the issue dedicated to adding another couple of teen heroes to the group, and Superboy learning the hard way the crying attracts dinosaurs, Young Justice #12 works mostly as set-up for the issues to follow as the team heads off to save their friend from (again) getting exiled to a strange world.

Young Justice #10 concludes the comic’s multiverse-jumping arc with our intrepid heroes kicking the butts of the not-so-heroic-heroes of Earth-3 before finally making it home. While I enjoyed the arc, and will miss this version of Stephanie Brown stepping up to take on the role of the main Bat-character in the alternate world as Batwoman, I do have to agree with Impulse that the storyline peaked with the team meeting the Zoo Crew.

As has been the comic’s set-up, this issue also provides flashbacks to another member of the team fleshing out the past of Jinny Hex (and her inheritance of all kinds of weird weapons left to her by great-great-grandfather (one of which makes her, literally, a much larger member of the team).
