X-Men '97 - Tolerance is Extinction

The three-part season finale of X-Men ’97 races through several more thread from different X-Men storylines, offers more Marvel hero cameos (although none are present when the fate of the world is at stake), wraps up the Bastion (Theo James) storyline, sees humanity’s actions nearly wipe out all life on Earth, and sets up the next season with the team separated across time and presumed dead. With Magneto (Matthew Waterson) freed, he uses his powers to shut down the Earth’s magnetic field leaving the Earth in darkness and creates an asteroid home for any mutants who wish to leave the world that hates them.

X-Men '97 - Bright Eyes

“Bright Eyes” is an odd episode. On one hand seeing an out-of-control Rogue (Lenore Zann) our for revenge provides some great action (certainly the biggest strength of the series) and we also get the other X-Men attending Gabmit‘s (A.J. LoCascio) funeral allowing them some closure. The episode is designed to highlight Rogue, and it does that extremely well both in how powerful she is as a character and how her grief and anger will lead her down a dark path which could cost the X-Men everything.

Sandwiched around the more impactful “Remember It” “Motendo/Lifedeath Part 1” and “Lifedeath Part 1” wrap-up the Storm storyline, check in on the cosmic adventures of Professor X and his doomed cosmic romance, and offer the obligatory Mojo (David Errigo Jr.) appearance which apparently every X-Men cartoon needs.

X-Men '97 - Fire Made Flesh

Picking up from the tease at the end of the previous episode with the sudden appearance of another Jean Grey (), “Fire Made Flesh” Cyclops‘ (Ray Chase) wife and the mother of his child to be a clone created by Mister Sinister (Chris Britton). With the baby now born, the clone is activated by Sinister becoming Dominatrix Jean Grey, calling herself the Goblin Queen, and abducts the baby leading to a rescue operation, triggering events of Nathan Summers’ fate, and leaving Cyclops without a wife or son.

X-Men '97 - To Me, My X-Men / Mutant Liberation Begins

Resurrecting the 90s X-Men cartoon, X-Men ’97 returns much of its voice cast and core characters to continue its storylines following the death of Charles Xavier. There’s quite a bit to praise in the opening two episodes of the series. As a huge fan of Cyclops (Ray Chase), I’ll start with the much maligned X-Men’s field leader who gets to kick a serious amount of butt stopping a terrorist group known as the Friends of Humanity who are kidnapping mutants and have access to Sentinel technology. A character Fox struggled with in various live-action adaptations is given a great showcase here. Cyclops is also navigating a world without his mentor one the eve of the birth of his son both of which alter his role towards the rest of the X-Men.
