Usagi Yojimbo: Lone Goat and Kid #5

The fifth issue of Usagi Yojimbo: Lone Goat and Kid reprints the story “The Way of the Samurai” in which the choice to save a messenger on the road leads to an encounter with the famous General Oyaneko. While on a walk through the town, Oyaneko tells Miyamoto Usagi of his service to Lord Higashi and the troubles of later serving the Lord’s son Hirone leading him to be assigned as an administrator for a peaceful town and a slow death far from the action of his youth.

Usagi Yojimbo #27

On their travels, Miyamoto Usagi and Yukichi encounter a young woman, Shizuye, at a shrine in the woods. From an old man, the pair learn that the shrine is dedicated to another young woman, Midori, who met tragic end in the haunted woods at the hands of a merchant who eventually also ended the lives of himself and his family. After fending off three men hired to kill Shizuye, the ronin stick around to watch and make sure history doesn’t repeat itself.

Although neither Usagi or Yukichi see any ghost discussed in the story (or at least don’t realize that they do), “A Ghost Story” is appropriately tired as the merchant’s jealous wife’s attempts to kill the servant eventually lead her to an unexpected encounter in the woods putting an end to Shizuye’s troubles for good.

Usagi Yojimbo: Lone Goat and Kid #2

Continuing the retelling of classic Usagi stories from the Lone Goat and Kid arc, Usagi Yojimbo: Lone Goat and Kid #2 weaves together three characters during the Festival of Kite Flying: our traveler, a kite maker, and an unscrupulous gambler.

Tatsusaburo‘s story kicks off events and covers the work needed to produce the region’s largest kite ever. Usagi and Hatsu‘s storylines converge quickly as the rabbit ronin exposes the crooked gambler to the town. Hatsu attempts to save face by turning all the gamblers against the ronin blaming him for the townspeople’s sudden anger to the gamblers as the chase crashes into Tatsusaburo’s story and Usagi goes for an unexpected ride. The different threads are woven delicately together in a rare bloodless Usagi adventure that still holds up well today.
